IEM in Maastricht

'We are not only talking to ourselves. Here we are also talking to the users of the information. And hopefully all of us will have the public in mind as we define what is the best approach.'

Prof. Ricardo Uauy - Chile (Former president of the International Union of Nutritional Sciences).

On May 28th 2010 an IEM activity organised as a satellite meeting of the 9th International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids (ISSFAL meeting) was held in Maastricht, the Netherlands.

Topic of the satellite: “Addressing controversies in lipid nutrition and heart health”.

Impressions of this IEM day can be seen by clicking on one of the pictures below. A slide show will open in a new window.

The goal of this meeting was to help scientists and practitioners working in the field of fats and health deal with controversial topics in lipid nutrition, so that they can apply this in their daily job. This will help the general public to achieve a better fat quality in their diet.

The day started with a science session updating all participants on the most recent controversies in the area of fats and heart health (programme details below). Science was followed by a master class on: ‘Dealing with Controversies in Heart Health Education’ followed. In this master class participants worked in break-out groups on some real-life examples of controversial topics in the area of fats and heart health under the super vision of professional moderators. The day ended with two inspirational presentations. One on ‘How to use modern media to spread information’ and one on two simple tools that can be used by experts and health care professionals to help people improve the fat quality of the diet.

Dr Henriette Grooten: Illustration of simple tools to educate the general public

A lively, impassioned debate about healthy fats for healthy hearts was held on May 31, 2010, in conjunction with the biennial meeting of the International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids (ISSFAL), Maastricht, The Netherlands, from May 29 to June 2, 2010. The debate was organized for ISSFAL by the International Expert Movement (IEM).

The two-part debate, chaired by Prof. Berthold Koletzko, Ludwig Maximilian University, Germany, addressed the following propositions:

(1) reduction of saturated fat is an important element of dietary change in the primary prevention of coronary heart disease (CHD) at the population level; (discussed by Profs. Bruce German, University of California, USA, and Ricardo Uauy, University of Chile, Chile, and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK)

(2) the consumption of at least 5 to 10% of energy from omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) reduces the risk of CHD relative to lower intakes (discussed by Prof. William Harris, University of South Dakota, USA, and Dr. Christopher Ramsden, National Institutes of Health, USA).

A full report of this dinner debate has been published in the Annals of Nutrition and Metabolism and can be found here.
