Consumers do sometimes not follow the information that comes from academics. Simply because it is put in a language that consumers cannot understand.'

Prof. Ibrahim Elmadfa - Austria

(Director, Institute of Nutritional Sciences, University of Vienna, President of the International Union of Nutritional Sciences)

In February 2009, 40 world leading experts from the field of nutrition and health, originating from 25 countries came together in Barcelona. There they discussed the critical importance of an optimal fat quality of the diet for health.

New research presented in Barcelona showed that people are confused about the role of fat in a healthy balanced diet. They do not know that there are bad fats, good fats and essential fats. And this is reflected in what they eat. In many countries around the world the quality of fats consumed is not in line with current recommendations.

At the meeting the experts draw from recent international scientific consensus and agreed on guidelines for an optimal fat quality of the diet.More importantly, the experts formulated a Call to Action that stressed the importance of consistent, simple and effective messages to improve the fat quality of the diet of people everywhere.

The guidelines and Call to Action were captured in a signed summary statement.
